Drinking excessive alcohol is considered one of the most common causes of raised blood pressure. We wanted to quantify the effects of a single dose of alcohol on blood pressure and heart rate within 24 hours of consumption. It is a common substance of abuse and its use can lead to more than 200 disorders including hypertension. This review aimed to quantify the acute effects of different doses of alcohol over time on blood pressure and heart rate in an adult population. The limitations of the study include to the cross-sectional design and the non-assessment of possible biological mechanisms that may lead to increased BP levels in individuals more sensitive to alcohol consumption.

With moderate doses of alcohol, blood pressure (BP) went up for up to seven hours but normalized after that. A biphasic response was observed with high doses of alcohol, with an initial decrease in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP, respectively) for up to 12 hours, increasing at more than 13 hours from consumption. Hence, we conducted additional analyses to see if the very high dose of alcohol (≥ 60 g or ≥ 1 g/kg) had any dose‐related effects compared to lower high doses of alcohol (31 to 59 g of alcohol) (see Table 9).

For the planned subgroup analysis based on sex, no studies reported male and female participant data separately.
